William Hugh Smith was born in Ga. He was reared in Ala. in Randolph Co. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1850 and was elected to the Ala. legislature in 1855, serving for four years. During the Civil War he left Ala., and resided in Union territory until the end of hostilities. Smith was elected Republican governor of Ala. in 1868, the 18th governor to be elected in the state.
